White fillings

White (composite) fillings – for less obvious repairs.

White fillings help to support the structure of a damaged tooth but, unlike visible amalgam fillings, they are virtually unnoticeable because they are crafted from tooth-coloured resin.

Although considered less durable than traditional amalgam, composite fillings are a more aesthetic choice and advanced materials now offer improved resilience, particularly in smaller cavities. Their longevity will also depend on where they are in the mouth and how much stress is placed on them.

The advantages

  • Unnoticeable – they are made from a natural-looking composite resin
  • Durable – thanks to modern materials
  • Less invasive – a smaller amount of the tooth needs removing prior to the placing of the filling

The treatment process

  • First we numb the area to be treated and remove the decayed area of tooth
  • We paint on a special gel to create tiny holes in the tooth to allow for better adhesion. This gel is then washed away and the tooth dried.
  • The colour-matched composite is applied in layers and shaped to restore the tooth.
  • We harden the moulded resin with a special bright light.

More about white fillings

To avoid decay developing around your new filling, you should keep your teeth clean by brushing at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and make sure you attend check-ups.

Although they have a cosmetic benefit, white fillings are available on the NHS, but only if clinically appropriate. Amalgam may be used if you need a more effective repair in a back tooth.

Patient Testimonials

"I was a very nervous patient as I knew I had bad teeth due to not brushing much as a youngster. I’d never been to the dentist in about 18 years due to the embarrassment I felt towards my teeth and I thought I would be judged. How wrong was I? The Verne Road Dental Practice has been amazing. Every member of staff are great professionals."
